Jesse and I registered for the North Face Endurance Challenge on Wednesday. The race has become something of a tradition, or as Jesse calls it, “the celebration.” After a year of training and racing, this beautiful race in our backyard is a fun way to cap off the year of endurance events. When faced with the prospect of joining me again for the 50K this year, the temptation was too much: Jesse registered for the 50-miler. In 2012, he raced the 50-miler in a crazy storm while I paced him for 25 muddy miles of it; last year he joined me for my first ultramarathon, the 50K.

Many muddy miles. Jesse smiled during all of them.

While my hope this year is to simply improve on last year’s time (less time spent at the aid stations, more hill work), Jesse is flirting with the idea of using TNFEC as a training run for a prospective 100-mile race, Rocky Raccoon. While running 100 miles isn’t my cup of tea, I know Jesse will be able to do it, barring injury, especially with his second full ironman behind him and months of recovery time (and ample treats).

Happy Friday!
