Before running the North Face Endurance Challenge 50K last month, I decided I wanted 2015 to be the year of my first 50-mile race. Rationalizing that I’ll be well-trained, having ran the Berlin Marathon about two months before the race, I wanted to take the next step after the 50K and graduate to the 50M.
After finishing the 50K, I reconsidered and thought my 50-mile ambitions a little audacious considering how badly I was hurting at the end of the 50K (19 miles short of 50). Now that I’m farther removed from the pain, I’ve decided to register for the 50 miler; I know that if I train properly and stay healthy, I’ll be able to accomplish this goal. When registration opened yesterday, I didn’t hesitate – I’m running a 50-miler in December! This will be my fourth year in a row participating in North Face’s annual championship in the Marin Headlands. I paced Jesse for half of his 50 miler in 2012, ran the 50K in 2013 and 2014, and will have graduated to the 50-mile race in 2015.
Jesse won’t be racing North Face this year; he’ll be recovering from his first 100-mile race in November. I won’t be surprised if he’s there to pace me for part of the race, though. We’ll be doing some long trail runs once we return from Europe!
This weekend is Kaiser Half Marathon, and I’m a little apprehensive. I may break race rule #1 and buy new shoes for the race. I’ve been using Altras, and I think they’re the source of my IT band pain.
AHHHH! SO exciting! Without a doubt you will do incredible, believe that!
Good luck this weekend as well, I hope switching shoes will help your IT band.
Thank you Jessie!!! You’re too kind. π
I’m so excited for you!! Hopefully I can run TNF half this year (no 50 milers for me yet π ) That’s a great picture of you!!
Thank you Jamie! The photos this year were really good in general! I made fewer scary faces! π
That’s so cool! I like how you’re easing yourself gently into ultras. I can’t even imagine how it feels to run a 50 miler. My goal is to do a 50 K in spring 2016. There’s a pretty mellow one (if that’s a thing?) about an hour north. Just have to get through marathon number two this year.
I don’t think a marathon or anything further than that can ever be mellow! π
Hell yeah!!!
Thanks!!!! I’m excited π
You’re such a beast! Get it Gurl! Good luck tomorrow.
Thanks Heather!
Thank you Heather!
Have a fantastic race tomorrow!!! You’re going to rock it!!! XOXO
Thank you Kristin!

Wow! I’m so excited for you! I think you will be amazing, and hey, what’s 17 more miles anyway?
Enjoy your half this weekend! Best of luck!
Yeah, 17 miles is nothin! π
And thank you! Have a great weekend!
I’ve broken that new shoe rule before (I know…terrible), but it actually worked out okay for me. I hope whatever you decide to do that you have a great race this weekend! And HOORAY for the 50 miler!!
Thanks Salt!!
Yaaaay Taylor! How exciting! It sounds like things are falling into place at the right time, and having an awesome goal like that to look forward to will really make all of your training this year meaningful and exciting.
Good luck this weekend! I hope you get your 1:55 goal and that everything goes well! And you get to recover watching the Superbowl so that’s pretty cool!
Thank you Hanna! I love having a party to go to after a race. π
Good luck this weekend!! 50 miles is a lot but I am sure that you will rock it!
Thank you! And yes, 50 miles is a lot of miles!
