I pulled the trigger and registered for the Olympic distance triathlon at Wildflower in May. This race scares me for a number of reasons: 1) The hills on the race scare Jesse, which means I’m in for a world of hurt. 2) I don’t have a bike (yet). 3) Bricks sound like painful workouts.
I’m using Wildflower as a training race (ha, ha) to prepare for an even longer and arguably scarier race, Vineman, a half Ironman. The hills at Vineman aren’t as steep, but with the race in July, the temperature could reach 90+ degrees, and I wilt like a flower when I’m in the sun for an extended period of time.
I plan on buying a road bike by the end of the year, with the intention of doing a few long rides on the weekends until my real training starts in February. I’m hoping training for these races puts less stress on my body than marathon training.
