Single-tracked Mind has taken a serious backseat in the last (almost) month. Between starting a new job where my hours are longer and blogging is an impossibility and being generally exhausted, neither Jesse nor I have made much time for blogging. I apologize for that and greatly miss the blogging world! Instead of recapping the last month of workouts, I’ll let this entry serve as a summary of the last month, and hopefully next week will be more regularly scheduled programming.
One thing I know for certain: I don’t like marathon training. Even with the carrot of a European trip dangling in front of me at the finish line, training for Berlin has cemented my disdain for distances longer than a half marathon. I’m not built like a Kenyan and value a variety in my workout regimen to make my body and mind happy. Next year, I won’t be running any road marathons, but I’ll keep my aspirations for next year for another post.
I missed several weekends of long runs due to unfortunate events and/or logistical snafus. I went camping with my mom, sister, and Fur Face the weekend of 8/1, and getting in a long run was nearly impossible.
I had one really good long run: Jesse and I ran a small trail race on the peninsula at Crystal Springs Reservoir, and the 22 miles I covered felt great! This was definitely the best confidence boost I’ve had since beginning training. Although the conditions won’t be the same for Berlin (hilly trail versus flat road), the long endurance effort felt consistent throughout, and I felt better after finishing than I ever have before.
Jesse and I went to Montreal from 8/13 – 8/18, and we had an absolute blast, eating treats like poutine, drinking delicious Quebec beer, and even fitting in several runs. We ran several times in Mount Royal, a large park in the center of the city with a winding trail that leads to a vista point of the city. We even managed a 15 mile run during 90 degree, 90% humidity temperatures.
After coming home and recovering from our red eye (I had to go to work the next day after crawling in bed at 4am…rough), we’re back in a normal workout regimen. We ran a race in Salt Point Park, north of Jenner near the Mendocino County border on Highway 1. While I originally planned to run the ~16 mile distance, rolling my ankle twice cut my race short, at 10 miles. Jesse was leading the men until the poorly marked trail led him down a wrong turn. He still did great, coming in 10th, and the area was absolutely beautiful. This morning, I went to yoga and ran 6 more miles to make up for yesterday’s misfortune.
wow it has been a minute! I’ve missed you! I love that the two of you can just up and run a 22 mile race like it’s nothing, lol.
Hit send before I was done, but anyway, great job sticking with it! Training in the summer is hard, especially when you find your heart just isn’t into the particular distance (been there…). But you will be glad you had this balance in your life. You’ll never get those moments with friends and family back, but there will always be other races.
Thanks for the encouragement, Hanna! It really has been a minute. I have a lot to catch up on, particularly with your blog!
great post. great pictures. congrats on the new job. i hope it works out. you guys look great at those finish lines! thx, joe
Thanks Joe!! Berlin will be fine. I’m happy there’s a light at the end of the tunnel 🙂
You have been busy!! And I am completely with you on marathons/training for them. Doing halfs are so much better, more balance! 🙂 I enjoyed your update!
I’m so glad you agree! Halves are the best! 🙂
I’m also training for my first marathon. While I’m looking forward to the marathon itself, I’m not enjoying the training all that much and like you, greatly prefer training for shorter distances.
I’m glad you agree! It’s so taxing on your body…there are so many other types of fun workouts!
Marathon training can be so rough and grueling, it’s much of the same thing over and over! You are doing great!!
Thank you! It is so grueling!
I am so overdue for a post myself! And am feeling you on the marathon training. Definitely my last road 26.2 for a while! So many others things I’d like to focus on!
YES! Solidarity, sister!

Good job at sticking with it- I’d love to run the Berlin marathon sometime. Is there any particular reason it’s so well-known and well-respected?
It’s super flat and the fastest marathon time ever was ran there!
Ah I understand now! Thank you for explaining it to my newbie self 😛
I’ve been wondering about you guys and how your training was going. Great to get a catch up. I wouldn’t discount your marathoning abilities yet. It is meant to wear you down and make you think it is impossible or not meant for you. That is how you build yourself up enough to endure the race. However, the second time around with training is so different. You know what to expect and those long runs no longer seem that long. Your mind has a much better grasp on it. Either way, I’m super proud of you guys and can’t wait to read more.
Thanks for the encouragement, Sarah!!! We missed you!
Glad you’re back! And looking forward to hearing what you’re considering doing next year. Have to say I actually loved marathon training – I had a plan involving three runs a week and whatever cross-training I wanted (triathlete!) and I just really enjoyed the simplicity of it and allowing myself to go slow and just enjoy the running! But everyone is different and if you’re not enjoying it then perhaps marathons are not for you! Either way; best of luck and you’re going to have an awesome time in Europe anyway!
I thought I was the only one on a blog hiatus! Hang in there, the training sucks but it will be incredible to run in Berlin! Glad you had fun in Montreal, and you were still able to get in 15 miles! Also, I love that you used the word “snafus” 😀
What a fun trip to Montreal!! I feel like spending as much time in your vacation destination as possible makes up for getting little sleep before having to go back to work!! You can always make that time up later!! 🙂
I always feel like you while training for a marathon. It just so hard and it takes up so much time! 😉
